NANCY HART STATE PARK
Forget boring history lessons. Nancy Hart was a six-foot-tall, cross-eyed Revolutionary War heroine who single-handedly captured six British Loyalists in her own kitchen. She actually shot one. If you head down to Elbert County, Georgia, you can walk the very ground where this wild standoff happened back in the 1770s. Pretty cool, right Most people drop by the state park just to see the replica log cabin, which locals built using original stones from Nancy's actual fireplace chimney.
Besides the gritty history, it is just a solid place to grab a picnic table under the pine trees and escape city noise for an afternoon. It stays pretty quiet. You can walk the short nature trails, check out the historical granite markers, or read up on the 1912 construction crew that accidentally unearthed six Loyalist skeletons nearby. Bring your own lunch, though. You will not find any fancy gift shops or giant tourist crowds here, so you get the woods mostly to yourself.
