SIEWERS SPRING STATE PARK
SIEWERS SPRING STATE PARK
You like trout Then you need to head down to Siewers Spring State Park just outside Decorah, where over eighteen million gallons of ice-cold water pour out of the ground every single day. It feeds the state fish hatchery. Honestly, watching hundreds of rainbow trout swarm the water when you toss a handful of fish food into the raceways is worth the trip all by itself. Kids love it. Plus, parking and walking around won't cost you a dime.
If fishing isn't really your thing, you can hop right onto the paved Trout Run Trail with a bike or just grab a picnic table near the water. Keep your eyes up, too. The famous Decorah bald eagles built a massive nest right in a cottonwood tree near the park, so you'll usually catch them hunting along the creek. Bring a light jacket even in July. That spring water keeps the air surprisingly chilly down by the banks.
