PILLSBURY POINT STATE PARK
PILLSBURY POINT STATE PARK
It fits on a quarter acre. If you blink while driving down the southern shore of West Okoboji Lake, you might miss Iowa's smallest state park entirely. People don't come here to hike for miles or pitch a tent. They come for the water. The rocky point juts right out into the lake, giving you an unbroken view across the deep blue water that private lake houses usually block. Grab a fishing pole. You can cast a line right off the rocks or just sit on the shore to watch the sunset hit the waves.
Beyond the views, the spot carries some pretty heavy history. Pillsbury settled here in 1856. A year later, this exact patch of ground became central to the Spirit Lake Massacre, turning it into a quiet place to stand and think about how wild this region used to be. Hard to imagine now. So if you're hanging out near Arnolds Park, take a break from the crowds and walk down to the water's edge. Just bring your camera.
