MARGO FRANKEL WOODS STATE PARK
MARGO FRANKEL WOODS STATE PARK
Need a quick outdoor escape Head just north of Des Moines to Margo Frankel Woods State Park, where 136 acres of dense timber swallow up all that city noise. It is shockingly quiet. You won't find flashy playgrounds or jet skis here, but you will get thick stands of old white oaks, steep ravines, and winding dirt paths. Pack boots. Birdwatchers love this spot because red-headed woodpeckers constantly hammer away at dead trees while spring warblers fill up the high canopy. Actually, Margo Frankel herself fought hard back in the 1930s to save places like this so folks could trade city concrete for deep green shade.

So why else visit The rustic picnic shelters give off a cool history-lesson vibe, built back when workers stacked native stone by hand. Great for lunch. You can grab an old wooden table, unpack a sandwich, and watch deer wander through the brush without crowds pushing past you. It feels wild. If you just want a quick, zero-fuss afternoon outdoors that won't drain your gas tank, this little spot in Polk County is worth your time.

October 12 Wilderness in the big city
park review stars; one to five We loved it. One trail was a bit hard to find....you need to cross the ravine it is dry and there are 2 concrete pipes you need to cross...this is well before the huge staircase.....You feel like you are in a large wilderness. We will definitely go back. Beautiful....we really enjoyed the fall colors.

park review stars; one to five Have lived in the area for many years and have been pleased to watch it evolve to what it is today. Unfortunately, on my recent visit August 9, 2020, the garbage was unbelievable. Spilling out of the cans and scattered all over both front shelters - grounds and tables. In this time of covid and distancing, I was meeting a friend there and bringing coffee to be outside and social distance. It was very disappointing and unfortunate. Hoping this was an isolated incident and has been cleaned up.

park review stars; one to five Saylor Township is the trustee of the park. They should be unlocking the gates in the morning and locking the gates at night.
